OKINAWA: Elephant Cages

These huge U.S. military communications structures are called “Elephant Cages” by Okinawans. Volcanic in origin, Okinawa has little flat land suitable for cultivation. U.S. military appropriation of scarce land is a source of conflict. Okinawan farmers will cultivate as close to “Cages” as possible.
